Frequently Asked Questions
What is Generalized Dystonia?
Generalized Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions, leading to twisting, repetitive movements, or abnormal postures. It can affect multiple areas of the body and may varies in intensity from person to person.
For me personally, it feels like sudden intense muscle cramps-similar to charley horses-that can occur randomly throughout the day, especially depending on my activity level. While there is no cure, gentle movement practices like yoga can help have helped me manage symptoms, build resilience and stay connected to my body in a supportive way.
Do I need to be flexible to start yoga?
No! Flexibility is not required to begin yoga. Yoga is about meeting yourself where you are and gradually working toward increased mobility. We focus on listening to your body and moving in ways that feel good for you.
I’m new to yoga. Will I be able to keep up with class?
Absolutely! Our sessions are designed to meet you where you are, no matter your experience level. You’ll have options to modify poses and adjust the intensity, so you can practice at your own pace. Every body is welcome.
How does Generalized Dystonia affect my teaching?
Living with this condition gives me a personal understanding of how unpredictable movement and chronic discomfort can be. Because of this, I design my classes with flexibility, accessibility, and compassion at the center.
I offer a variety of modifications and encourage students to move intuitively, rest when needed, and honor what their bodies are asking for. Whether you’re living with chronic pain, limited mobility, or simply want a gentle and mindful practice, you’ll find a welcoming space in my sessions.
Yoga with isn’t about perfect poses-it’s about showing up, listening inward, and moving in a way that feels good for you.
What if I have a medical condition or injury?
If you have a medical condition or injury, please let me know before the session starts. We’ll work with you to provide modifications and ensure that your practice is safe and comfortable.
Is yoga spiritual?
Yoga can be spiritual for some, but it’s not a requirement. Sessions are focused on mindfulness, breathing, and movement, and everyone is encouraged to approach the practice in a way that feels authentic to them. Whether you’re seeking stress relief, physical fitness, or a deeper spiritual connection, yoga can meet you where you are.
